B1 4-6-0 61208 RET Retford Thrumpton (G.C.) 08/07/1947 26/09/1965 Hauled an Up fitted freight. During the previous three months I rarely saw a Class 4 fitted freight on this line. This day was the second occasion on mid-morning, late-summer Saturdays that I saw a steam hauled service (vans forming the load). The B1's attack of the bank resulted in prodigious amounts of dark-brown smoke. 61208 would have coupled-up to the train at nearby Rotherwood Sidings, Sheffield, the location where diesel, electric and steam traction exchanged trains.
O4 2-8-0 63612 41H Staveley (G.C.) 01/1914 14/11/1965 Hauled a Class 8 Up goods. Around midday the engine returned 'light', running onto the branch (Waleswood Curve) for Killamarsh Junction and a destination to the south. During the previous three months I only occasionally saw O4/8s' on the Worksop to Sheffield line, members of the O1 class appeared more regularly here.
