'Britannia' class Pacifics, the first British Railways' standard design introduced in 1951, with 6' 2" driving wheels and 2 outside cylinders 20" x 28". The last ten to be constructed, Nos. 70045-70054 were turned out in 1954. Many of the class are named after poets, but Nos. 70014-70029 perpetuate the names of famous Great Western locomotives of the past. Nos. 70050-70054, allocated to Scotland, are named after Scottish firths. |
