21/01/1952 Last Stirling goodes engine With the withdrawal of No. 64105 from traffic, the Stirling goods engine disappears from the Eastern Region of British Railways. Built in 1892 as No. 313 at Doncaster (Works No. 592), it had 17½ in. x 26 in. cylinders and 5 ft. 1 in. coupled wheels; the domeless boiler was 4 ft. 4 in. in diameter. The Great Northern classification was J6, power C. Under Ivatt's rule, it was later supplied with a domed boiler, then becoming Class J5, power B, then in October 1925, it received a 4 ft. 8 in. diameter boiler, with L.N.E.R. classification J3. Incidentally, it should be remarked that G.N. Class J5 was equivalent to L.N.E. Class J4. It first ran in L.N.E. livery as No 313 without any suffix N, but was soon renumbered 3313; it became No. 4105 on 17/11/1946, and 64105 on 2/6/1948; for many years it was at the London end of the line, working from Hitchin, but latterly was at Ardsley till withdrawn.
