Withdrawals - suprise and expected |
As was only to be expected, 45637 Windward Islands, the engine piloting the down express which ran into the Harrow wreck recently has been withdrawn for scrapping. A withdrawal which was more of a surprise was that of No. 58863, recently returned from Birkenhead to Devons Road. This is the second N.L. Goods Tank to be withdrawn by British Railways. The L.M.S. withdrew five in 1937, leaving fifteen in stock which were passed on to British Railways. There are still thirteen left. As there have been numerous renumberings, the sequence is given below: all were built at Bow Works and in many cases new Works Nos. were allotted on renewal or rebuilding: N.L. No. 78 when rebuilt in 1910 may have been allotted Bow No. 339, but it was not found on the engine. |
