24/01/1953 Birmingham Area Local trains, usually 51XX hauled, are now taken over by the 82000 series and are mostly of 3-car formations (in fact the writer has yet to see one hauling more than this). On goods traffic they have not appeared at all, though the 41XX and 51XX tanks performed prodigious tasks in this respect. The section of line between Wolverhampton, Handsworth and Smethwick is now regularly visited by an L.M.R. loco. on a special oil-wagon working, though its origin is still obscure. Locos noted have been 42895 on 9/7/52, 48070 on 27/11/52, 48764 (6C) on 3/2/53, 49202 repainted with emblem on tender (a new departure this?) on 10/2/53, and 49505 on 14/2/53. G.W. 9708, a condenser tank from the London area, was noted running light early this month northwards and probably bound for Wolverhampton works.
78001 has also been reported working local Birmingham-Wolverhampton trains this month, without shed plate.
Rumour has it that Derby works have now started on a further 10 73000 Class Pacifics (sic) for the Scottish Area. Crewe are starting the 2-10-0's with Franco-Crosti boilers, on completion of the present batch of 'Britannias,' and the first one should be out towards the end of May, provided boilers arrive in time as anticipated.
