30/06/1959 Last Barton Wright 2F 0-6-0 The last Barton Wright ex-L.Y.R. Class 2F 0-6-0 was withdrawn from service during June, being 52044 of Wakefield (56A). This locomotive was built in August, 1887, by Beyer, Peacock & Co., Maker's No. 2840, as L.Y.R. 957. It was renumbered 12044 by the L.M.S.R. at an unrecorded date, finally becoming B.R. 52044 in April, 1948, and was of particular interest as it had retained the original builder's works plates on the centre wheel-splashers throughout its long life. The class was introduced in 1876 and ultimately totalled 280 locomotives. From 1891 onwards, Aspinall rebuit 230 of the class as 0-6-0 saddle-tanks and only the final batch of fifty 0-6-0s remained unrebuilt as tender engines. These all passed into the L.M.S.R. at the grouping and were renumbered 12015-64. Although withdrawal commenced in November, 1930, twenty-three survived to become B.R. stock at nationalisation.
